Health and Wellness from Coast to Coast

I am a Family and Consumer Sciences teacher at Peninsula High School, on the Key Peninsula in western Washington. This project will be used in a 9th and 10th grade class I am teaching on nutrition and wellness. Using the ePals website I have contacted a class in New York City, teaching a general health curriculum to 9th grade students. Each student in my class is paired up with a peer from the east coast classroom. The pairs will create one blog on classroomblogmeister.com for each pair that they will share to post issues on health, wellness, nutrition and anything else that may relate to the class.
Tuesday mornings (before noon) the New York class will post a blog entry.
Tuesday afternoons the Washington class will (1) respond with any thoughts and (2) write their own entry.
The following Tuesday morning the New York class will (1) respond with any thoughts and (2) write their own entry. This will continue throughout the semester.
Each week I will communicate with the New York teacher on our own blog so we can stay up to date on the students’ progress and new assignments. We will give the students different writing assignments or writing prompts each week. Some of these may include:
• What will you be doing for physical activity this week? Examples may be walking to school, playing football, taking a yoga class, walking your dog, cleaning your house, going to the gym or skiing. What activities do you like or dislike? Does your family partake in the activities also? What are most of your peers doing for physical activity?
• Using the links provided by the teachers find an article based on a health issue that was written in the state you live or is applicable to the area you live in. Briefly (2-3 sentences) sum up the article, comment on it and say whether it relates to your life. Why or why not?
• What is your favorite place to dine out with your friends or family? Explain why. Describe the food, cost and atmosphere. How frequently do you go?
